A mentor is a guide. Someone that can help you define your goals, set them, and then achieve them.
Lots of people want to be successful. There’s often a lot of baggage and resistance to success, though. We just don’t want to move forward. Something’s holding us back. It’s usually ourselves.
It’s great to have someone that’s apart from you, but still close enough to know you. Someone to help clarify your goals, then hold you accountable to them.
A mentor is just that person. Your mentor will call you weekly, give you instruction, tasks and assignments, and then follow through on those to encourage you to do them. Whether that’s finishing that new song, booking your first gig, or even your hundredth gig, a mentor can help you raise your professionalism, and your own self-image as an artist.
Mentoring includes:
- Personality assessment – What are your strengths and weaknesses? How can you play to the strengths and overcome the weaknesses?
- Your artistic self-image – Who are you? What can you do? How do you define and describe yourself?
- Goal setting – Where will you be in a year? In two years? In five years?
- Your art – Honing your craft, your performance, your songwriting. Making the most of your practice time. Getting recordings made.
- Your audience – Who are your fans? How can you find them, and help them to find you?
- Promotions – Helping your audience grow. Getting your name out. Using the Internet to its full advantage
- Putting it all together – and making it happen!
It's true that our mentors are musicians like yourself. How else could they know what you're up against? But more than that, they are trained professional business mentors, able to help you find your focus and move ahead!
